Definition: Win File Open
The File menu within an application is used to open, print and close documents. Select File/Open to retrieve an existing document or File/New to create a new one. The dialogs are pretty much the same in all versions of Windows. See also Win File Open multiple files and Win Open With.

The Open dialog displays the files in the folder last used. Detail View is selected here (name, date, type and size). Clicking the View button (top right) changes the display mode (see below). Clicking in "Look in" (top left) lets you navigate up and down the folder hierarchy to choose a different folder. See Win Folder organization.
Clicking View and switching to one of several thumbnail views (icon views) lets users choose by file name and visual image.
